Banned beauty boost for Julia Roberts
You might think Julia Roberts is beautiful enough to appear in a magazine ad without digital alterations, but L’Oreal didn’t think so. Digitally enhanced ads in two L’Oreal campaigns have been banned in Britain by the publishing industry’s Advertising Standards Authority, which said they were misleading and unrealistic. The prohibited ads are for the Lancome makeup Teint Miracle, which is endorsed by Roberts, and for The Eraser “anti-aging” makeup, featuring altered photos of supermodel Christy Turlington. The agency acted in response to a complaint from Jo Swinson, a member of parliament who says the self-image of young women suffers when they judge themselves on the basis of unrealistic images in the media. In the United States, fashion magazines face similar complaints, but aren’t subject to an Advertising Standards Authority.
